img2"Not the splendor of the landscape, not the events of the history, not the monuments dell' art, not the songs of the poets, have served to render note the Valpolicella how much its typical product: the wine".
Giuseppe Silvestri, an important local writer, historian, journalist, introducing wine as a topic in his "La Valpolicella" a sort of Bible on the economic, cultural and social history of this valley, wrote in 1950: " The Valpolicella zone is greatly famous not so much for its breathtaking panoramas, its historic heritage or poets' lyrics, but for its wines ".
As a matter of fact these red celebrated wines played a leading role in the millenary history of the Valpolicella.
In Roman times RECIOTO was known as RETICUM, while in the origins ACINATICO was the name for AMARONE. Whatewer the origin, wines from Valpolicella are chief protagonists at table and are very generous, like the land where high quality grapes are grown.
It is a hilly lush area with tidy patches of vineyards, cherry orchards and olive groves, favoured by a mild tempered climate, with a soil rich in minerals.
The hillsides are protected to the north by the Lessini Mountains and the valley where Marano lies is a veritable paradise, a natural amphitheatre exposed to the sun from rising to sunset, opened towards the Veronese plain to the south.
Such is the zone where some delicate, deeply coloured, spicy wines are produced, each with a distinct character.
